1 NOTE
2 CONT I never met my grandfather Ellis as he had deserted the family when m
2 CONC y mother, Lottie Mae aka "Rickey", was younger. My mother rarely, if ev
2 CONC er, spoke of him (as none of his children ever did). I did ask my mothe
2 CONC r about him many years ago when I was a young girl and curious about my "
2 CONC roots". Now it should be understood that my mother is of the type that "
2 CONC turns the other cheek" and rarely do you hear a "bad word" come out of h
2 CONC er mouth. At first she kind of brushed me off with a "I don't know a
2 CONC nything about him. He took off when I was young". But I did pursue t
2 CONC he matter, trying to get a feel for what type of man he had been. My mo
2 CONC ther finally said "The only thing I know about him is he was the mea
2 CONC nest @*# that I have ever known". After I had gotten over the shock o
2 CONC f this statement, I asked her why she said that. She then began to rela
2 CONC te a few stories such as the time Ellis got angry at the old plow horse t
2 CONC hey had and picked up a whip and whipped the horse "until it dropped d
2 CONC ead". She also said she remembered one time he took her brother She
2 CONC rman outside and whipped him "until the blood ran". She could no
2 CONC t recall what had lead up to this, she could only remember watching poo
2 CONC r Sherman being whipped.
2 CONT My mother stated that Ellis would come and go, usually showing up wh
2 CONC en he had run out of money and needed more. She said Ellis would stick a
2 CONC round just long enough for her mother to get pregnant, take any money h
2 CONC e could, and then disappear again for long periods of time. She related a
2 CONC n incident where, in addition to her regular work, Mamaw had been takin
2 CONC g on extra work such as laundry and ironing so that she could buy all o
2 CONC f the kids a Christmas present one year. Up until that time none of the k
2 CONC ids had ever had a "regular" present; past Christmas presents had been s
2 CONC ome kind of fruit, such as an apple, in their stocking. My mom said tha
2 CONC t Mamaw had bought each child a set of clothes, wrapped them in paper, a
2 CONC nd then placed them under the tree ready to be opened Christmas Day. Ri
2 CONC ght before Christmas Day Ellis showed up and, as usual, was wanting mon
2 CONC ey. Mamaw told him that she didn't have any money and Ellis replied tha
2 CONC t she was lying as he knew she always had a little cash stowed away for a "
2 CONC rainy day". Mamaw told him that she didn't have any extra money at all a
2 CONC s it was Christmas and she had bought a present for each of the childre
2 CONC n. Ellis then looked at the presents under the tree and realized that w
2 CONC hat Mamaw had said was true; there was no money. My mother said he then b
2 CONC ecame angry and strode over to the tree, grabbed the presents, and thre
2 CONC w them all into the wood stove, burning each and every one of them. Whe
2 CONC n I asked my mother if, prior to this, they had all been excited about h
2 CONC aving presents to open Christmas morning, she seemed at first to be sur
2 CONC prised at the question, as if she had never given this a thought. She h
2 CONC onestly could not remember how she had felt before Ellis came in and th
2 CONC rew those presents into the fire; not joy, not anticipation, nothing. T
2 CONC he only thing that stood out in her mind was watching those presents bu
2 CONC rn up, "the flames big and orangy color", and hearing her mother c
2 CONC ry like her heart would break because the kids would have no presents t
2 CONC o open on Christmas, not even a piece of fruit, because there was no mo
2 CONC ney left to replace what had been burned. When relating this story, eve
2 CONC n now, I get teary-eyed at the fact that seeing and hearing her mother c
2 CONC ry (which she says she rarely, if ever, recalled happening before this i
2 CONC ncident) so affected my mother that it wiped out any memory of the happ
2 CONC iness that she must have felt at anticipating having a present to open f
2 CONC or the first time - by Debra Hayes Brodbeck as related by Lottie Mae Ga
2 CONC rrett Hayes.
2 CONT
2 CONT Of note is the fact that my Uncle Coleman did try to determine short
2 CONC ly after his mother, Lexie Evans Garrett, died if a divorce had ever be
2 CONC en obtained by either of his parents. As far as he could determine he c
2 CONC ould not find record of a divorce being filed and no family member can r
2 CONC ecall Mamaw ever stating that she and Ellis were divorced. All family m
2 CONC embers agree that, knowing Mamaw, it is most likely that they were neve
2 CONC r divorced. When Coleman was notified that Ellis had died, he did say t
2 CONC hat he had been told that Ellis had other children after he left Lexie a
2 CONC nd that none of them would claim Ellis' body. Uncle Coleman, even thoug
2 CONC h he had not seen nor heard from/of his father for many years, felt it w
2 CONC as his christian duty to see that Ellis was laid to rest. He spoke with h
2 CONC is mother about this as he wanted to explain to her why he was arrangin
2 CONC g the funeral and burial, which was in the same cemetery Mamaw had her o
2 CONC wn plot, purchased when she laid her beloved son Sherman to rest. Mamaw t
2 CONC old him that she understood that this was something that he felt was hi
2 CONC s duty. The only stipulation his mother gave him was that Ellis was to b
2 CONC e buried as far away from her (thus Sherman's) resting place as he coul
2 CONC d get him! Fortunately, Ellis' burial place is not in the general vicin
2 CONC ity of where Mamaw and Sherman's final resting place is located. Ellis i
2 CONC s laid to rest next to his brother Peter.
2 CONT
2 CONT Since starting this family genealogy I have made numerous calls to m
2 CONC y mother to ask questions, her opinions, and to pick her brain regardin
2 CONC g her mother and father and the family history. At first (as she always h
2 CONC as in the past), she would refer to Mamaw as "Mother" and to Ellis as "
2 CONC Ellis". But as time went on, and my sister and I dug deeper and farther b
2 CONC ack into Ellis' ancestry, many unknown and delightful tidbits began to r
2 CONC eveal themselves. So as these little gems of info began to unfold, I wo
2 CONC uld call my mom up to chat and impart the newest findings. Such as the f
2 CONC act that the Garretts had owned plantations, growing mainly tobacco, an
2 CONC d that they had been respected landowners. Or that Ellis' maternal side
2 CONC , the Strouds, could trace their ancestry back to the le Strodes which w
2 CONC ere respected as great warriors. I now notice that my mother refers to E
2 CONC llis as "Dad". And so, some old wounds have healed, which has made the m
2 CONC any, many hours (too many to count) that my sister Lexie and I have put i
2 CONC nto researching the family line worth every single minute - DLB.

2 CONT Alexa Sevilla Garrett was born in Nantahala Township, Macon County, N
2 CONC orth Carolina to a farmer and his wife who eventually had 16 children, 1
2 CONC 3 of which lived to adulthood. She grew up in the Deep South, in and ar
2 CONC ound the Macon County area. By the time she was three she was picking c
2 CONC otton and working in the fields. She told of backbreaking work, the con
2 CONC stant bending over, the heat and humidity. Of how heavy her long skirt a
2 CONC nd petticoat were, adding that she would lift them up and tuck them in a
2 CONC t the waist so she could get a little breeze on her legs. When she grew i
2 CONC nto womanhood many heard of Alexa Sevilla Evans and how pretty she was w
2 CONC ith her long, black hair and beautiful blue eyes.
2 CONT When she was eighteen she met and married Michael Ghormley, always a
2 CONC ffectionately referred to by Lexie as "Mikey". Neither Lexie nor Mike l
2 CONC iked her given name so she changed it, and from then on was known as "L
2 CONC exie Willie". She and Mike had two children, a son, Jesse Bernard, and a d
2 CONC aughter Loise; the daughter would die young of pneumonia, as would Mike
2 CONC . Lexie always spoke highly of her "Mikey" stating, "He was always g
2 CONC ood to me." Sometime after the death of Loise and her beloved Mikey
2 CONC , about 1912, she and Bernard moved to Georgia where her parents had al
2 CONC ready relocated a few years before. She began to work in a mill and she s
2 CONC poke of taking homemade pickles and crackers for her lunch everyday; li
2 CONC fe was hard for a widow with a young son to support.
2 CONT About 1913 she met, probably at the mill she was working in, and mar
2 CONC ried Ellis Garrett. They had two sons and a daughter and then, in 1921, t
2 CONC he couple decided to move to Missouri, possibly because Ellis had famil
2 CONC y there, or maybe for better employment opportunities. For whatever rea
2 CONC son, they packed up what belongings could be put on a covered farm wago
2 CONC n, and the kids, and set off for the long hard journey to Missouri. Rus
2 CONC h, Lexie's brother, accompanied them to help with the move, later retur
2 CONC ning to Georgia. Lexie walked most of the journey from Georgia to Misso
2 CONC uri behind the wagon, carrying baby Lottie Mae and tending her three so
2 CONC ns, Bernard, Sherman, and Coleman. Shortly after arriving in Missouri, P
2 CONC auline was born in October of the same year so Lexie must have been pre
2 CONC gnant when she walked those many miles. Ellis and Lexie would have thre
2 CONC e more daughters, Mary Belle, Willie, and Lucille.
2 CONT Life wasn't easy for Lexie; Ellis was a drinker and abusive, especia
2 CONC lly to his stepson Bernard. He would hang around long enough to get her p
2 CONC regnant, grab what money he could, and then he would disappear for long p
2 CONC eriods of time. Lexie continued to work out in the fields of their farm
2 CONC , taking in extra work as she could, in order to support the family. Lo
2 CONC ttie Mae tells of her mother working long, hard hours and coming into t
2 CONC he house every evening exhausted. One of the kids would always run and g
2 CONC et a pan of warm water for her so she could soak her feet. Lottie Mae s
2 CONC aid there were many times her mother would have her get a pen and paper a
2 CONC nd Lexie would dictate letters to her while she soaked, many to her fat
2 CONC her and to her Aunt Bunie. The last child, Lucille, was born in 1929; s
2 CONC oon after that Ellis left for the last time and never returned. Years a
2 CONC go Coleman and his wife, June Baker Garrett, were staying with Lexie an
2 CONC d June spent many afternoons talking with her. June asked Lexie why, wh
2 CONC en Ellis had been so abusive, she had stayed with him. Lexie told her t
2 CONC hat she had left Ellis three times but that each time she left him, her f
2 CONC amily, most notably her father, made her go back to him. Most likely th
2 CONC e thought of her father's censure would have been more difficult and pa
2 CONC inful for her to face than Ellis' abuse.
2 CONT After Ellis left for the last time, Lexie bought a cafe in Willard, M
2 CONC issouri and it became known as "Garrett's Cafe." Lexie worked long hour
2 CONC s in the cafe, as did the children. The kids would get out of school an
2 CONC d go to the cafe to help out; Lexie had indeed taught her children the m
2 CONC eaning of "good work ethics", which stayed with all of them throughout t
2 CONC heir lives. About 1944 or 1945, before WWII ended, Lexie sold the cafe a
2 CONC nd moved to Springfield. All of the family remember well the big, two s
2 CONC tory house on Robberson Street. By this time Lexie had many grandchildr
2 CONC en, and as the years went by there would be great, as well as great-gre
2 CONC at-grandchildren and many family get-togethers in the house on Robberso
2 CONC n Street.
2 CONT In Feb 1982, at the age of 92, Lexie broke her hip. While in the hos
2 CONC pital she was told by the doctors that she could not return home until s
2 CONC he could walk and that usually took about 6 months (medical science, of c
2 CONC ourse, not being like it is today). Lexie walked out of the hospital in 2
2 CONC 7 days. Soon after, the house on Robberson Street was sold and she move
2 CONC d into a mobile home behind her daughter Pauline's house. About six mon
2 CONC ths after she left the hospital, Lexie suffered a stroke which paralyze
2 CONC d her left side and affected her speech. The next five years must have b
2 CONC een torture for a woman who had always been so independent. But Lexie, a
2 CONC s she had always done, met this challenge and coped with her disabiliti
2 CONC es with grace and dignity.
2 CONT Lexie Evans Ghormley Garrett passed away in the fall of 1986, leavin
2 CONC g behind a loving family and a legacy that will not be forgotten. Durin
2 CONC g her lifetime, she saw 17 United States presidents take the Oath of Of
2 CONC fice, her country involved in 5 wars - not counting the "Cold War", man
2 CONC 's first flight in an airplane and his first steps on the moon, the sin
2 CONC king of the Titanic and the Lusitania, the discovery of antibiotics, di
2 CONC seases such as polio and smallpox eradicated, and the introduction of A
2 CONC IDS. She was a strong woman with true, pioneering grit and an indomitab
2 CONC le spirit. "Mamaw, we miss you."

2 CONT Of French-Swiss Mennonite origins. Rowland arrived in Philadelphia on 1
2 CONC 2 Oct 1741 from the Rhinish Palatinate. By 1757 he had married. From 17

2 CONC etween 1792 and 1796 Rowland lived on the New River in Wilken County (l

2 CONC d is believed to have died ca 1809 in the Drakes Creek area of Warren (
2 CONC later Simpson) County, Kentucky in the home of his youngest son, Joseph
2 CONC . In the mid 1750's Casper was placed in the ministry of the Germantown B

2 CONT In the late 1780's, Peter Stroud moved with his parents from Orange Cou
2 CONC nty to Burke County and settled in the Muddy Creek region (now McDowell C
2 CONC ounty). Unfortunately most of the early Burke County Deeds were burned d
2 CONC uring the Civil War. It rises south of Marion, and flows south east for a
2 CONC while (about 5 miles), then turns north east and flows about nine miles u
2 CONC ntil it joins the Catawba River. The Strouds lived somewhere along that c
2 CONC reek.
2 CONT
2 CONT In Burke County Court for Jan 1810, Peter Sr and Jr were both mentioned i
2 CONC n regards to a road "Ordered by the court that the following persons b

2 CONC ad "met and found a road past Peter Strouds field."
2 CONT
2 CONT
2 CONT Peter Stroud died sometime prior to 27 Nov 1834 for on that date an Est
2 CONC ate Sale was held in Burke County for his Estate. A 1922 letter from Ed A
2 CONC nderson, grandson of Jesse Stroud, to John G. Stroud, grandson of Willi
2 CONC am Stroud, stated that their grandfathers Jesse and William were brothe
2 CONC rs to Peter Stroud Jr and that all were sons of Peter Stroud Sr. Commen
2 CONC ting on the three Strouds listed on the 1790 census, Mr. Anderson had t
2 CONC his to say: "This Peter Stroud Jr was your father's Uncle Peter and t
2 CONC he one you all know about and was killed by Garrett." No record was b
2 CONC een found yet to show whether this was a murder or an accident. It has b
2 CONC een speculated that his grandson, Marvel Garrett, killed him.
2 CONT
2 CONT The Estate Sale of Peter Stroud’s property dated 27 Nov 1834 shows that h
2 CONC is son James Stroud was the Administrator. The purchasers included seve
2 CONC ral family members, but not all identified. Following are the names of s
2 CONC ome of the purchasers with possible relationships in parenthesis:
2 CONT
2 CONT Joshua Curtis (son-in-law), Joseph Garrett (son in law), B. Peter St
2 CONC roud ("Big" Peter G. Stroud, Peter’s son), Ecles Stroud (Echolds Stroud
2 CONC , nephew), James Stroud (son), John Stroud (son), L. Peter Stroud ("Lit
2 CONC tle" Peter Stroud, 1813, nephew), Margaret Stroud (widow), Peter Stroud
2 CONC , P. Stroud (unknown), Robert Stroud (son), and W. M. Stroud (William, n
2 CONC ephew).
2 CONT
2 CONT
2 CONT Margaret was listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County living with d
2 CONC aughter Mary Stroud Curtis and family. She was not found on the 1860 ce
2 CONC nsus, so she probably died in the 1850-1860 time-frame. There is a tomb
2 CONC stone in the Carter Cemetery in Towns County, Georgia next to her son P
2 CONC eter Grayson Stroud (1807) which says "Mother of Peter Stroud" w
2 CONC ith no dates. If Peter G. Stroud is her son then this is Margaret’s gra
2 CONC ve. She may have went to live with Peter in the 1850's and died there i
2 CONC n north Georgia.
2 CONT
2 CONT Some valuable evidence about Peter and Margaret's family is found in tw
2 CONC o ancient letters that have survived (mostly) intact. One was dated 183
2 CONC 7 and addressed to Delilah (wife of John Stroud), and the other was fro
2 CONC m 1838 and from John & Delilah Stroud and James and Rebecca (Stroud) Ma
2 CONC shburn addressed to "Brother and Sister" (names not given). Thes
2 CONC e two letters reveal a great deal about the Stroud family, and mention a n
2 CONC umber of people (without always stating the relationship), however they d
2 CONC o provide some invaluable information that does not exist anywhere else
2 CONC . These letters were shared by cousins Mildred Deyo and Alva G. Barret
2 CONC t.
2 CONT
2 CONT The first letter was dated 3 Sep 1837 Muddy Creek (which is where all t
2 CONC he Strouds lived in Burke, now McDowell County). The addressee's name w
2 CONC as not given, but from the text of the letter it was clearly addressed t
2 CONC o "Delilah". There were two Delilah's in the family, one was the wife o
2 CONC f William Stroud Sr (brother to Peter Stroud), the other was Delilah Br
2 CONC ight, wife of John Stroud (son of Peter Stroud). I believe it was the l
2 CONC atter that was being addressed, for her family had just moved to Georgi
2 CONC a before 1837. Unknown author for the last part of the letter is missin
2 CONC g where you would expect to find a signature:

2 CONT The next letter was dated December 1838 and seems to be a reply to the a

2 CONC ut no names were given. It was signed by "your brother and sister"
2 CONC i> and four names were attached John Stroud and Delilah Stroud and J

2 CONT The above two letters are very helpful. They do seem to prove that Rebe

2 CONT
2 CONT Peter and Margaret (Curtis) Stroud had 11 children per census records. S

2 CONC aced in the order as named in their father's will, with ages from the a
2 CONC ssumed ages of Richard and Joys. Those ages are consistent with Henry h
2 CONC aving a married daughter with 3 children in 1569, another daughter hav

2 CONC uggesting Thomas was married in the early 1540s. That Edward had only o

1 NOTE
2 CONT Peter was born on Sturgeon's Run, now Sturgeon Creek, near the border b
2 CONC etween Brunswick and Dinwiddie Counties and believed to be the son of W
2 CONC illiam Stroud and Margaret Rose. As a boy he moved with his father and b
2 CONC rothers to the Edgecombe/Granville/Orange County North Carolina area ar
2 CONC ound 1741.
2 CONT
2 CONT According to some old research, Peter Stroud was married twice, first t
2 CONC o Naomi and second to Rebecca. There are records proving Rebecca, but n
2 CONC o primary records showing his first wife was named "Naomi". However, th
2 CONC is must have been based on some old family document or family tradition f
2 CONC or the name "Naomi" did get used a lot among the Stroud family in later g
2 CONC enerations.
2 CONT
2 CONT In 1758 Peter's father William gave him and his brother each a deed of g
2 CONC ift of 158 acres in Orange County. Peter and his family lived on a plan
2 CONC tation on Terrell's Creek, on the county line between Orange and Chatha
2 CONC m Counties, southeast of Durham. They probably grew tobacco.
2 CONT
2 CONT Peter had numerous children per the early census records. In an old 192
2 CONC 2 letter from Ed Anderson to John G. Stroud, he (Anderson) stated that J
2 CONC esse was a son of Peter. Anderson was a grandson of Jesse, and the addr
2 CONC essee (John G. Stroud) was a grandson of William Stroud (Jesse's brothe
2 CONC r). We can probably safely assume that Ed Anderson was personally acqua
2 CONC inted with the structure of the early family. Anderson referred to "
2 CONC your grandfather William Stroud, you know was a brother to old Uncle Pe
2 CONC ter and so was our Jesse Stroud". Unfortunately he didn't mention a
2 CONC nything about the rest of the family. Peter first married Naomi and had J
2 CONC esse, Susanna, and Peter Jr. He married Rebecah around 1770 and had Wil
2 CONC liam and possibly Fanny and Joyce. Per census records Peter had other c
2 CONC hildren but none are proven. In 1789 Peter and Rebecah sold their Terre
2 CONC lls Creek plantation of 800 acres for 500 pounds to someone back in Bru
2 CONC nswick County. Rebecah signed with an X. The family moved to what is no
2 CONC w the Marion, McDowell Co., NC area. They are listed in the 1790 census i
2 CONC n the Morgan District and they lived on Bucks Creek.
2 CONT
2 CONT Peter Stroud made a Will, but unfortunately it was lost with most of th
2 CONC e other early Burke County records. We know of its existence for it was m
2 CONC entioned in the Court Minutes as being recorded in July 1827 by Thomas R
2 CONC aburn "and wife". This record means that Peter Stroud Sr was dea
2 CONC d by July 1827. Presumably, widow Rebecca was the one mentioned as "and w
2 CONC ife" in 1827, so she survived Peter. She was considerably younger than h
2 CONC im, so she may have lived many years more but no record of her beyond 1
2 CONC 827 has been found. She was not listed on the 1830 or 1840 census, thou
2 CONC gh if living, she may have been with a married son or daughter.
2 CONT
2 CONT It is unknown if Peter owned slaves but William Stroud Jr, his brother, l
2 CONC eft several slaves to his children in his will.

2 CONT William is one of the more colorful Strouds in our line. Although he wa
2 CONC s illiterate, William bought and sold a great deal of land in Virginia a
2 CONC nd North Carolina. He was arrested twice, the first time in Virginia ab
2 CONC out the same time as his brother Joshua, and on similar charges, and br
2 CONC eaking out of jail the second time.
2 CONT
2 CONT He was born about 1700 in Bristol Parish, Prince George County, Virgina
2 CONC . He lived on the south side of the Meherrin River, Surry County, Virgi
2 CONC nia between 1721-1723. He received a grant of 100 acres on the south si
2 CONC de of Meherrin River in Surry (probably now Mecklenburg) County, Virgin
2 CONC ia, in 1721; he sold it in 1723. This was the first recorded of many la
2 CONC nd transactions that William would engage in.
2 CONT
2 CONT In 1738 John Sr. died leaving half of his land on Sturgeon Run in Bruns
2 CONC wick County, 196 acres, to William and the other half to John Jr. This w
2 CONC as in St. Andrew's Parish on the line between Dinwiddie and Brunswick C
2 CONC ounty, Virginia.
2 CONT
2 CONT He was sued for adultery by the church wardens of the parish, for tresp
2 CONC ass, assault, and also for debt. On 7 Aug 1740 it was reported that he w
2 CONC as not in the county. At some point his first wife Margaret died, and h
2 CONC e married Elizabeth.
2 CONT
2 CONT On 27 Jun 1741 both William and his brother John Stroud Jr sold Drury S
2 CONC tith the 196 acres on Sturgeon Run where he was living at the time. He t
2 CONC hen moved his family to Edgecombe Precinct (now Warren County), North C
2 CONC arolina. His brothers Joshua (who had been arrested for adultery about t
2 CONC he same time William had and who had abandoned his wife) and John Jr an
2 CONC d his family came with him. In 1742 he received a grant of several hund
2 CONC red acres on Cabin Branch of Smith's Creek and several years later rece
2 CONC ived another 500 acre grant for more Cabin Branch land. Over the next t
2 CONC wenty years he proceeded to purchase more land here and to sell it to s
2 CONC everal others, including his son John, who continued to buy land along t
2 CONC he creek.
2 CONT
2 CONT In 1755 he was imprisoned in Granville County, North Carolina but escap
2 CONC ed aided by his wife Elizabeth, his son William Jr, his daughter-in-law E
2 CONC lizabeth, and others. William Jr. was later indicted for assisting in t
2 CONC he escape. He then moved to Orange County, North Carolina, where he con
2 CONC tinued to sell land in Granville County including 315 acres in Orange C
2 CONC ounty which he divided, giving 157 acres of it to William Jr and 158 ac
2 CONC res to Peter Stroud.
2 CONT
2 CONT The last known mention of William Stroud Sr. was on 1 Feb 1783 when he a
2 CONC cknowleded in Lincoln county that John Stroud of that county was his el
2 CONC dest son by his first wife Margaret. At this time he would have been ar
2 CONC ound 83.

2 CONT John Stroud is the earliest confirmed Stroud in our line.
2 CONT
2 CONT John Stroud paid quintrents on 60 acres of land in Prince George County
2 CONC , Virginia, in 1704. In June 1711 he sold various items to William Byrd
2 CONC . This document was witnessed by his son, Joseph; both of them signed w

2 CONC d upon which he lived for 36 pounds with the stipulation that if the mo
2 CONC ney was paid back by October 1713, the deed would be void. This was wit
2 CONC nessed by his son Joshua, who signed with an X..
2 CONT
2 CONT He died about 1737 leaving a will which has been lost; Hannah Stroud ad
2 CONC ministered his estate (she signed with an X). The destruction of the Pr
2 CONC ince George County records by both the British and the Union Army makes f
2 CONC urther information difficult to locate. However, later deeds record his s
