Grandad Herman Hayes could play any instrument that had strings. I remember visiting and he would often play the guitar and banjo. One time I went on a vacation with my dad and we traveled throughout the southern states. We were driving in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas and my dad stopped at a little shop built out of logs. They were selling handmade instruments. My dad bought Grandad Hayes a mandolin handmade out of rosewood - it was gorgeous! When we got back my Grandad Hayes played it beautifully. Grandad Hayes was a sweet and gentle man - DLB.
