Ninth Generation
392. Jeremiah
GENUNG Sr149,293 was born on 6 Apr 1671 in Flushing, Queens County,
New York. He was christened on 9 Apr 1671 in Flushing, Queens County,
New York. He signed a will on 8 Sep 1746 in North Castle, Westchester
County, New York.
Will made. "In the name of God, Amen, the 8 of September 1746, I Jeremiah
Gonnong, of North Castle in Westechester Co., New York, being very sick, I leave
to my wife Martha all estate of every kind and make her Executor." Witnesses:
John Gonnong, Gilbert Arnold, William Firth.
He died on 20 Jun 1748 in New Castle, Westchester Coounty, New York.
He had his estate probated on 20 Jun 1748/49.
The records for two or three generations seemed a puzzle. When Prof. W.F. Ganong
came out with his "Descendants of Thomas Ganong" in 1893, he gave in
his introductory chapter the opinion arrived at by all who had searched the material,
that the Ganongs were descended from John, the older son of John of Flushing,
and that the Genungs were descended from Jeremiah, the other son. This was a
natural conclusion, but was unproven. Not till we found Isaac Ganong's extracts
from John Gannung's will, did we know that differences in spelling came a generation
later among the sons of Jeremiah. The soft G of the Genung's belongs entirely
to the New Jersey settlers and their descendants, while the hard G of the Ganongs,
Ganoungs, Ganungs, Ga Nuns, etc., is from that spelling which was most common
in Westchester county colonial days - Gannung, a spelling now extinct.
1698: Living in Flushing, Queens Co., New York with wife Martha and one child,
name spelled Genning.
1711: During the famine he was living in Flushing.
1714: At the death of his father, he and his brother John shared their father's
farm.
Aug. 19, 1722 - Nov. 30-1724: Moved to Westchester Co., New York.
He crossed the narrow neck of the western end of Long Island Sound, opposite
Flushing, to Cornell Neck or Old Ferry Point, to the land owned by the Cornell
and Willett families, or to the old village of Westchester, the center of the
Pell family property. Lived in North Castle, Westchester County, New York when
he made his will and probably died there.
