England. He immigrated in 1683 to Chester County, Pennsylvania.276,318
Joshua Hoopes sailed to the Delaware River on the ship 'Providence' of Scarborough,
Robert Hopper, Master. This was William Penn's last of 13 ships. He brought with
him his 3 children and wife Esibele (Isabel). They landed in Pennsylavania 10
Sep 1683. Upon his arrival in Philadelphia from England, he gave a letter to
William Penn, which Penn's sister had entrusted Joshua Hoopes to personally deliver.

He died on 15 May 1723 in Middleton Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
He was buried in 1723. He was Quaker.
In 1677 in Skelton, England: "Joshua Hoope for himself and Wife, was
fined 10s, but he being no Quaker paid the money down" for "suffering
a Meeting" at the house of Tobias Hoope "there for which Fines a Warrant
of Distress was granted by Edward Trotter, Justice..."
After immigrating to America, settled in Makefield, Bucks County, Pennsylvania
and became members of Falls Monthly Meeting of Friends, which was frequently
held at their home. Joshua Hoopes brought a certificate from Friends at Rowsby,
dated 4th of 3d month 1683 which states that he was born at Skelton and "there
descended himself from his childhood, his ffather, brothers, and relations being
honest and crditable inhabitants and people of account in and about ye towne
of Skelton aforesaid" and he has "of late years frequented ye
meetings of ye people called Quakers neare ye said towne..."
The Hoopes' would have to leave England to avoid religious persecution for being
Quakers. There is a record of a fine paid by Joshua 'Hoope' of 10 schillings,
a fine for he and his wife being present at a Quaker meeting. Joshua was still
a member of the Church of England at least until May 1679. Soon after, he became
a Quaker as many of his relatives had already done. Joshua carried a certificate
from the Meeting of Friends at Rowsby (now spelled Roxby). The certificate was
dated May 4, 1683. Roxby is in the North Riding of Yorkshire.
Joshua's ancestral home, a farm near Skelton and Moorsholm was still in existence
in 1998. It was built in 1160 and was inhabited by a young couple, Mr. &
Mrs. John Powers. It is located on Guisborough Road about 2-1/2 miles north of
Moorsholm and 5 miles from Skelton, set back from the road on a hill.
Joshua settled in Makefield, Bucks County, near Langhorne. He and his family
became members of the Falls Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. Joshua
was deeded 100 acres from William Penn in 1697.
In 1684 he was chosen to be a peace maker for the county. September 1692, he
was elected to a committee charged with dividing Bucks County into Townships.
In his later years he served as an Elder at the Middletown Meeting in Bucks County.
Joshua was married 3 times: first marriage to Ann Perkes, second marriage on
1 May 1679 to an Isabel whose last name is unknown, and thirdly Eleanor Pownell
who he married on 20 Oct 1693.
Joshua HOOPS and Isabel were married on 15 May 1670 in Skelton, Cleveland,
Yorkshire, England. 557. Isabel died
on 20 Mar 1691. Children were:
