HOUSE OF JOHN
John Kitchel was born at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, on 2 February 1714 and was one of the first residents of Hanover to spend his entire lifetime in that community. Between the mid-1700s and the Revolutionary War days, Hanover was a self-sufficient farming community with several hundred inhabitants. Nearly all of the farms were small, but there were a few people who had over a hundred acres. The owners of large places were called "Nabobs" by the local residents. John Kitchel was a farmer and one of the Nabobs. John inherited his farmland from his father. He was a private man, having little involvement in local politics, land dealings, or legal transactions. Thus, the traces he left were largely through his children. Having three different wives, he fathered sixteen children, and was the most prolific father found in Kitchell family history.

First marriage to Maria Phoenix abt 1735 with 1 child, Obediah, born 1740.
Second marriage to Keziah Ball with 10 children.
Third marriage to Mercy Abigail Parkhurst about 1754 with 5 children: David, Benjamin, Phineas, Bethuel, and Josiah Joseph.
