2 CONT Ernest Ray Hayes loved to have an ice cold malt beer on a hot summer d
2 CONC ay. I can remember him sitting on the porch swing, wiping sweat off his f
2 CONC ace with a handkerchief, and taking a long drink of that cold beer. My s
2 CONC ister Cricket tells of when they were young, before I was born, of him w
2 CONC aking them up in the morning; he would come in and tell them to wake up a
2 CONC nd the girls would roll over and pull the covers over their head. He wo
2 CONC uld then go over and pick their big toe up, raising their foot up into t
2 CONC he air. Cricket says it was the most annoying thing, but effective; it g
2 CONC ot them up out of bed quick!
2 CONT He was a man that loved to work with his hands; he had been a cabine
2 CONC t maker and a journeyman machinist. He had also been a newsman and a ph
2 CONC otographer. He hand crafted the most beautiful furniture out of wood. H
2 CONC ere was someone that, at the age of 23, took on 3 little girls and neve
2 CONC r, not once, made them feel they were unwanted or unloved, they were hi
2 CONC s daughters - to this day, as he will always be, he is their beloved Da
2 CONC ddy.
2 CONT Ernest Hayes served his Country during WWII and was proud to do so. H
2 CONC e worked hard his whole life but, unfortunately, died young at the age 5

2 CONT Daniel Hoopes, fought in the war with Cromwell. In company with an unma
2 CONC rried brother he came to this country in the year 1683. The brother, so
2 CONC on tiring of the pioneer life, returned to his home in England. Therefo
2 CONC re, Daniel and family were the first of the name in America. Daniel Hoo
2 CONC pes first settled farther north in this State but soon after procuring t
2 CONC he right of 64 acres from William Penn in what is now Chester and Delaw
2 CONC are Counties and in the township of Westtown, made that his home. It is r
2 CONC elated that some of the older children were born in a cave, which was t
2 CONC he first home of the family and, in those primitive times, not an excep
2 CONC tional case. The line of Delaware county runs through the lower portion o
2 CONC f the estate. On the main portion of the land there was built in 1723 w
2 CONC hat at that time was considered an elegant mansion. It contained about t
2 CONC welve rooms and has its secret closet, etc. This house has quite a hist
2 CONC ory. The old homestead is still standing and looks as though it would f
2 CONC or several years to come.

2 CONT In 1967 there is the following Court order found: "Elinor Clayton, a
2 CONC n orphan of the age of fourteen years, was ordered by the Court to serv

2 CONT Obituary for Joshua Hoopes, grandson of Daniel Hoopes:
2 CONT Joshua Hoopes, aged 88 years and 7 months; the oldest of the name o
2 CONC f Hoopes in the country. At Downingtown, on the evening of the 11th of s
2 CONC ame, granddaughter of the above; aged between 3 and 4 years. In Sadsbur
2 CONC y, on the 25th of the same Francis W. Hoopes, grandson of the above Jos
2 CONC hua; age near thirty years (not 40 as stated) He has left a widow and t
2 CONC hree small children.
2 CONT As instances of longevity are occasionally noticed, the following ma
2 CONC y not be uninteresting. Daniel Hoopes, grandfather of the above named J
2 CONC oshua Hoopes, was married in 1696. The issue of that marriage was seven
2 CONC teen children; nine of whose ages averaged more than 84 years; and seve
2 CONC n of the nine were living about 100 years after the union of their pare
2 CONC nts. The last of them died about 120 years after her parents marriage. T
2 CONC he sum of the ages amounts to about 1036 years. If we add the ages of D
2 CONC aniel and his wife, we have about 1200 years. There are probably very f
2 CONC ew instances in modern times of the immediate issue of a single marriag
2 CONC e enjoying 1036 years of life.
2 CONT When a boy Daniel came into this country with his father Joshua Hoop
2 CONC es, in company with William Penn. Joshua took an active part in the Gov
2 CONC ernment; it also appears that Daniel was a member of the Legislature in t
2 CONC he years 1708-9; since which the family seem not to have engaged much i
2 CONC n public business. From Daniel are descended all the Hoopes of America.

2 CONT The first surveys of land in Marlborough were made about 1701, along w
2 CONC hat is known as the "Street Road," and it is doubtful if any person had s
2 CONC ettled here prior to this date. The earliest tax list preserved is for t
2 CONC he year 1715, at which time there were but twenty-six landowners assess
2 CONC ed in the territory comprised in the two Townships of East and West Mar
2 CONC lborough, and of these at least three were non-residents. Joseph Pennoc
2 CONC k was the largest taxpayer, and Henry Hayes
2 CONT came next. It may be safely assumed that very few of the settlers prece
2 CONC ded Henry Hayes. At his coming this region was comparatively a wilderne
2 CONC ss, and if not all covered with woods was at least destitute of roads a
2 CONC nd bridges. Wheeled vehicles were almost unknown, and while a horseman m
2 CONC ight find his way in almost any direction, yet as people began to fence t
2 CONC heir fields to protect their crops, it became necessary to have legally e
2 CONC stablished highways.
2 CONT What is known as the "Street Road" was provided for by the original s
2 CONC urvey of the lands fronting thereon, it being William Penn's plan that e
2 CONC ach township should have a street running through the middle thereof, b
2 CONC ut in this case the road was not opened and clearly marked in all parts
2 CONC , and in later years this caused much dispute. On August 28, 1716, Henr
2 CONC y Hayes and others were appointed to view and definitely locate a part t

2 CONC ntered a complaint against this report, and a new jury was appointed, w

1 NOTE
2 CONT Robert and Richard Woodward were thought to be brothers. They were prob
2 CONC ably born in Acton Parish, Cheshire, England, and were probably sons of E
2 CONC dward Woodward. They are believed to have immigrated to America with si
2 CONC ster and brother-in-law Thomas and Elizabeth Woodward Eavenson. The pri
2 CONC ncipal point of confusion in the Robert and Richard Woodward families i
2 CONC s that both Robert and Richard had sons named Richard, who were both bo
2 CONC rn about 1673. Fortunately, the two families lived in slightly differen
2 CONC t areas of Chester County which helps sort them out. Robert and his son
2 CONC s originally lived on Crum Creek in Providence Township, while Richard a
2 CONC nd his sons lived on Chester Creek in Thornbury Township. Later Richard
2 CONC , son of Robert, lived in East Bradford and Richard, son of Richard, li
2 CONC ved in West Bradford.
2 CONT
2 CONT Land records of Chester County, Pennsylvania may indicate that Robert h
2 CONC ad 2 other sons. On 8 Mar 1696 Robert Woodward granted to John Powell l
2 CONC and on Crum Creek. The deed is witnessed by Thomas Woodward. Another de
2 CONC ed dated 11 Jun 1696 mentions land on Crum Creek bounded by George Wood
2 CONC ward. The name of Robert's wife is unknown. She did not sign the deeds, b
2 CONC ut at that very early date it was not customary for the wife to sign. S
2 CONC he may have been deceased. Robert's son Richard is well documented in Q
2 CONC uaker records and in Nayle wills in Chester County.
2 CONT
2 CONT Robert was mentioned at times as a resident of Lower Providence Townshi
2 CONC p, Chester Township and Manor of Rocklands which was in New Castle Coun
2 CONC ty, PA. (New Castle is now the northern most county of Delaware). He wa
2 CONC s a juror twice in 1688. On one occasion he was required to post bond f
2 CONC or peaceful behavior after using abusive language towards the magistrat
2 CONC es. No further record of Robert's whereabouts was found."0
2 CONT
2 CONT Robert, like his brother Richard, also had a son Richard who at one tim
2 CONC e lived in Thornbury. It is recorded that in 1703 John Willis of Birmin
2 CONC gham conveyed 150 acres of land to Richard Woodward, late of Thornbury, y
2 CONC eoman, son of Robert Woodward of the County of New Castle, tailor, for 6
2 CONC 0 pounds. This land was later in East Bradford Township and it was in t
2 CONC his township that Richard 1673-1748 was living at the time his will was r
2 CONC ecorded at West Chester, PA. These facts seem to establish without doub
2 CONC t that our ancestry traces to Robert Woodward rather than to his brothe
2 CONC r Richard.
2 CONT
2 CONT Other possible children:
2 CONT 3. Hannah Woodward died 11/1686 in Acton Parish, Cheshire, England.
2 CONT 4. George Woodward - owned land on Crum Creek in Providence Twp
2 CONT 5. Thomas Woodward - witnessed deed 8 Mar 1696. Another deed on 20 Mar 1
2 CONC 711 tells us that Nathaniel Ring sold 150 acres of land to Richard Wood
2 CONC ward late of Thornbury, yeoman, son of Robert Woodward of Birmingham, T
2 CONC ailor. Henry and Deborah Nayle were witnesses to this deed (father and m
2 CONC other-in-law of Richard). This tells us that this Richard also lived in T
2 CONC hornbury at some period in time.

2 CONC e was a private man, having little involvement in local politics, land d

2 CONT With the advent of Abraham Kitchel's family, the American Kitchell fami
2 CONC ly tree was beginning to take shape. Abraham was born at Newark, NJ and l
2 CONC ived there until, at the age of 31 years, he resigned his seat on the N
2 CONC ewark judiciary bench and moved to Hanover, or Whippany, in what is now M
2 CONC orris County, NJ. This area of New Jersey, which borders the Whippanong R
2 CONC iver, became the birthplace, home and burial place of many of our Kitch
2 CONC ell ancestors. The Morris County area, like Newark, was purchased from t
2 CONC he Lenni-Lenape Indians. The exact date that Abraham moved his family f
2 CONC rom Newark to Morris County, New Jersey is uncertain. Less than 25 mile
2 CONC s separates these two localities.
2 CONT
2 CONT The Hanover Township was made a part of Hunterdon County, and the settl
2 CONC ement had grown sufficiently by 1722 to carry a part of the burden of g
2 CONC overnment. Abraham was made a lieutenant in Captain John Howard's compa
2 CONC ny of the Hanover militia. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1
2 CONC 725, consequently "Esquire," by Governor William Burnett. In Oct of 173
2 CONC 7, Abraham was commissioned to act as assistant county judge and to hol
2 CONC d Court of Oyer and Terminer (High Criminal Court) by John Hamilton who w
2 CONC as at that time President of the Council. The "United East and West Jer
2 CONC sey" had been separated from New York a few years earlier. After Morris C
2 CONC ounty was set apart from the county of Hunterdon by legislation on 15 M
2 CONC ar 1739, Abraham was among six men to become its first county judges. H
2 CONC e was appointed by Governor Lewis Morris, in whose honor the county was n
2 CONC amed, to hold court at Morristown for life, but he was taken by death s
2 CONC oon after on 12 Dec 1741 at the age of 62 years.
2 CONT
2 CONT On 14 Jun 1737 a bill of sale was recorded, wherein Abraham purchased a N
2 CONC egro man, named Cromoll, who was about 25 years of age. The purchase wa
2 CONC s made from John Plume, of Newark, for 47 pounds and 15 shillings. Abra
2 CONC ham, like his ancestors Robert and Samuel, was a farmer, officer of the c
2 CONC ourt, and active in community church work. He was a deacon in the Presb
2 CONC yterian church, and now sleeps under the name of "Deacon Abraham Kit
2 CONC che," in God's Acre at Whippany, New Jersey.
2 CONT
2 CONT Abraham was married to Sarah Bruen in 1703. They had seven children. Hi
2 CONC s wife was a daughter of John Bruen and granddaughter of Obadiah Bruen, w
2 CONC ho was one of the early pioneers of the Newark settlement. Through Sara
2 CONC h, who is the mother of all known Robert Kitchell descendants that foll
2 CONC ow Abraham, there is a clear line to European royalty.
2 CONT
2 CONT In 1741, 45 military officers of Morris County, including Abraham Kitch
2 CONC el, signed oaths of allegiance to the King of England. Excerpts taken f
2 CONC rom an article entitled "Two Most Unique Parchments of Morris County, N
2 CONC ew Jersey." These parchments, dated 1 Jan 1741 and 20 Apr 1741 respecti
2 CONC vely, were both signed by Abraham, who was apparently in good health at t
2 CONC hat time:
2 CONT "Below are presented for the interest of historians and genealogists
2 CONC , the copies of two parchments… No similar document is extant in relati
2 CONC on to other sections of New Jersey. Evidently enough, they were inspire
2 CONC d by fears of the Jacobite activities in England, imperiling the throne o
2 CONC f King George II…. Though the officers of the militia may have been obl
2 CONC iged to take oaths of allegiance, it would seem that the others signed g
2 CONC ratuitously."
2 CONT
2 CONT
2 CONT Land records, the signature on his unprobated will, his tombstone inscr
2 CONC iption, and early publications all show that Abraham had dropped an "L" f
2 CONC rom his surname, spelling it Kitchel.
2 CONT
2 CONT As of Aug 1989 there are 5,455 known descendants of Joseph Kitchel; 2,6
2 CONC 41 descendants of John, who had thirteen [I count sixteen] children by t
2 CONC hree wives; and only 205 descendants of David. David was just 30 years o
2 CONC ld at the time of his death. Part of the imbalance in the total number o
2 CONC f known descendants in each branch may be attributed to the fact that m
2 CONC ost Kitchell family historians have been descendants of Joseph.

2 CONT Suppositions are the nearest approach that can be made to the origin of t
2 CONC he Ball family. There have been several theories expressed, but we are s
2 CONC ure only that Balls have lived in England for eight or nine hundred yea
2 CONC rs, perhaps longer, and that they were particularly numerous in the Mid
2 CONC landshires of England. They have been supposed by some to be of Welsh o
2 CONC r Norman extraction; others describe them as "Teutons, fired with Aryan b
2 CONC lood, rough and ready, eager for conquest; it may be pirates and invade
2 CONC rs, triumphant over natives of our mother island, and
2 CONT assuming that might give them right to lands and flocks of conquered tr
2 CONC ibes."
2 CONT The most romantic and interesting explanation, and probably the most pl
2 CONC ausible, is that "the name had been handed down from the Romans and the f
2 CONC amily had been transplanted to England through the Roman invasion" Whe
2 CONC n Caesar conquered Briton, the desperately wounded were left behind in t
2 CONC he hurried return to Rome. Among these, it is thought, was a certain Jo
2 CONC han Bal (Jan Bale), who was nursed back to health by an Anglic family a
2 CONC nd who married their daughter.
2 CONT After the Roman legions left the island, society was for a long time in c
2 CONC onstant flux. About the tenth century Angles, Jutes, Lanes, Saxons, and N
2 CONC ormans were there, contending, destroying, and causing so much general c
2 CONC onfusion that accurate history of the period is impossible.
2 CONT
2 CONT The first Ball in New Jersey was Edward. Edward Ball was born in Newcas
2 CONC tle-upon-Tyne, England about 1640. His early life was spent in the Engl
2 CONC ish colony of Barbados with his father. His life there gave him suitabl
2 CONC e training for the pioneering life he would encounter in the New World. E
2 CONC dward Ball was about twenty-five years old in May of 1667 when he trave
2 CONC led by ship from Boston to the Passaic River under the guidance of Capt
2 CONC ain Robert Treat and settled there with his wife, Abigail Blatchley, a t
2 CONC hree-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter. His name appears among t
2 CONC he first settlers of Branford, Connecticut in 1665. Edward Ball was pro
2 CONC bably a farmer by profession. During the winter months, he was probably a l
2 CONC awyer. He owned a house on Broad street in Newark and owned much land o
2 CONC utside of the Newark settlement. He appeared in three court cases in Br
2 CONC anford, twice being sued - one for running a wagon over a pig. In 1665 E
2 CONC d. Frisbie complained of him about a swine, but Ball won the trial. In 1
